Not for the squimish

So the last few days have been crazy for me.  I developed an abscess on my lower back and on Saturday 8/21 I had it lanced.  If you've never had this done... it hurts like crap!  They poke you with a needle to numb it but it doesn't really do much.  Then they use a scalpel to cut a small incision to start draining it.  The use their fingers to drain out some of the blood and puss then they pack it with this packing/gauze stuff to help it to continue to drain.  The whole process only takes about 5 mins but man does it hurt.  So since Saturday, and it's now Tuesday, I haven't been able to drive or sit back in a chair.  I basically have to lay on my tummy or side or I can sit on the edge of a chair.  Not comfortable at all after a while.  I can't wait til I'm able to sleep on my back again.  I never realize how much you do it til you cant.  I've pretty much been home since Saturday afternoon which sounds nice but it's getting old.  I missed out the weekend and I've only left the house to go to my parent's (my mom drove) and then my roommate took me back to the doctor on Monday.  Other than that I haven't left the house.  I tried to go to to work this morning but I was really stiff and I think I developed some kind of rash cuz it feels like I have small cuts in my back where the tape was.  Its weird though because I've been using the same tape all weekend and haven't had any issues.  It's been getting better throughout the day so that's a good sign.  I'm going to try to go to Schuster Choir practice tonight but I'm not 100% sure I'm gonna be able to.

Sorry there's no photo stuff but as you can tell that hasn't really been something I've had time for.  By the next time hopefully I'll have some new pics or something.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

Every Thursday night in July and August the is a Big Band concert downtown at a metropark.  I love going and listening to the music and watching the, mostly old, people dance and taking pictures.  I'm trying not to take as many as I have in years past so that I can just enjoy but I always take at least a few.

This is one of my favorite couples.  I've been watching them since I started going about 4 years go.  I saw them before they had their son (who is so cute).  Last year the Dad used to strap him to his chest as they danced.  They are great dancers and one of the few younger couples.  It's great seeing everyone having fun and often times people will dance with different partners, especially some of the older people.
Since the show goes from 7:30-9:30pm I have to play with the settings on my camera to get pics after dark.  Oddly enough I've found that the fishbowl setting works well at night.  Why?  I'm not sure.  At the venue where this was taken it's completely outdoors with just, basically, street lights.  When they have it under a covered area it's a little easier because the lighting is more even.
My advise to you is to check out local events in your area that you like or would like to learn more about.  It allows you to experience something you like or something new and it allows you to practice you photography.  And we all know that if you like something you'll probably take better pictures.  That's why I love Big Band Night!

To be honest with you.....

Ok I know it's been like 2-3 months since I last posted but to be honest with you I've gotten really busy with life.  I am working first shift now (yeah!!!) but I know dont have as much time to update as I did before.  I would actually like to sell this site but there aren't enough of ya'll visiting me yet!  *wink wink*

I haven't taken many pics lately but here's one I took with my cell July 3rd at a local festival called CityFolk.

These guys were awesome.  Three guys playing trumbones.  I dont remember the name of the group though.  They were from New Orleans and they played lots of New Orleans jazz type music.  Very sweet!  After the show my parents and I stayed and saw the fireworks.  Really good.  I love when they choreograph the fireworks to music.
Last Thursday 7/15 I went to a big band concert downtown at an outside pavilion.  I've been going every summer for last 3 years.  The city metroparks host a different group every Thursday night throughout July and August.  It's mostly older people but I love it.  It's been getting bigger and bigger every year.  I love going and watching people dance, especially the older folks.  I take some pics but I try not to take many because I want to be more in the moment than living behind the camera.

It feels like I haven't posted in forever but its only been 2 weeks.  Anyways... Life has been very busy lately.  I do have some shots I hope to get uploaded soon.  There was a beautiful sunset one day a few weeks ago and I started playing with the manual settings on my camera to see what worked best.  I'm not sure I totally figured it out because I had a big problem with "noise" in the pics.  For those of you who may not know, noise is extraneous visible artifacts that degrade digital image quality.  It appears as multicolored flecks, also referred to as digital grain.  It's most visible in digital images captured at high ISO settings.  (I got this definition from "Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide" by Michael Guncheon)  The high clouds were dark and the houses were dark but the sky at horizon level was a mixture of bright reds, yellows and oranges.  I would have benefited from my tripod and more time but the sky would only look this way for so long.

I've mentioned that Field Guide book before but the more I read it the more I learn.  It covers numerous PowerShot models.  If you don't have a PowerShot like I do I would imagine that there's a Field Guide book for many other brands.  The book is easy to read and understand and has lots of tips and ideas and pictures.  Good stuff!

I just read this article and wow, I didn't know there were so many cameras available.  I love the advise of checking out stores you're thinking of buying from with the Better Business Bureau to protect yourself.  I don't think I would have thought about that.  I also liked that the writer was honest and said that your search for a bargain would take some time.
One critique is that I wish there would have been some links to sites where I could find some bargains.  The article mentions Staples, it would have been nice to have it linked.  Just as convenience though because Staples is pretty easy to find!
